Describe it the way you remember it. locatinator finds it in your documents, photos, video and audio.

Search for what's in it.

No file is called “snowy mountains”, but the photos, the film and your trip notes all come up, best match first.

CtrlAltSpace

See it before you open it.

Ctrl+P previews the file beside the results, cued to the moment that matched. The seek bar marks every other match.

Photos, notes, PDFs, recordings.

Arrow through the results and the preview follows: notes open at the passage, PDFs at the page, your words highlighted.

Quote the words that must be there.

Put a word in quotes and only files containing it appear. Subtitles count, so a film turns up by one line of dialogue. Alt+1 to 6 filters by kind.

Names and keywords

Three letters of a file name are enough. Keyword search works from the first scan.

Straight to the moment.

Not just which file, but where in it. A film opens at the line, a recording at the sound, a PDF at the page, with every other match marked along the way.

Your files never leave your PC.

locatinator runs entirely on your computer. Nothing you index or search for is sent anywhere.

Private

No account, no cloud. Your files and your searches stay on your computer.

Works offline

After a one-time setup, search works with no internet connection.

Fast on any PC

Uses your graphics card when it can, and your processor when it can't.

Out of your way

Indexing slows down while you work and waits while you're on battery.

Always up to date

New and changed files are picked up as you save them.

Network folders too

Add a NAS folder like any other. If it goes offline, its files stay in your results.

Under the hood

Search by meaning runs EmbeddingGemma 2 on llama.cpp: on AMD, NVIDIA and Intel graphics cards through Vulkan, or on the processor. The index is a single SQLite file. The model is a one-time download of 730 MB to 1.54 GB; the recommended size is 865 MB.

On an i5-13600K with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, a page of text takes 18 ms, a photo 147 ms, and a two-hour film about 11 minutes.

Hands stay on the keys.
